#7: Worms | 20 Games Challenge
Learning curve intensifies! This Worms-inspired game gave me the chance to dive much deeper into a bunch of concepts I've been wanting to explore for ages – including a procedural generator of destructible 2D terrain, creating a random map from a noise texture.
- Procedural destructible 2D terrain generator based on random noise
- Pre-rendered 2D pixel art based on low-poly 3D models, a cool new workflow I'll definitely try out more
- Node-based state machine for player characters
- Composition pattern with Health, Movement, Aim, Weapon components
- Camera shake on explosion
- Inheritance based projectile and worm class
- Turn-based system with camera switching
- Custom-resource-based weapon data system and inventory slots
- Inventory UI and weapon selection
- 3 weapons, including my absolute favourite Holy Hand Grenade
- The most democratic rocket you've ever seen
Potential to expand with:
- Enemy CPU (currently supports 2 player characters taking turns)
- More weapons, of course!
- Gadgets such as the ninja rope
- Floating islands and caves in terrain generation
Assets: My own!

What is the 20 Games Challenge?
In early 2026, I found out about the 20 Games Challenge. It's a fun challenge designed by SDG Games to recreate 20 games in an engine of your choice. The premise of the challenge is that, by copying a masterpiece, artists often gain a deeper understanding of the fundamentals behind their craft. This can also apply to game developers and game designers.
I was sceptical at first, but as someone who's obsessed with figuring out how things work, this challenge had some huge appeal. So, in March 2026, I decided to give it a try: I'd attempt to recreate 20 famous games in about a year!
The 20 Games Challenge is fairly guided for the first 10 games, then free for the rest. Each level requires you to complete a set of steps in a vertical slice to consider it done. If you want to attempt it too, you can see options for the first 10 levels on this page.
My challenge list:
- Pong
- Jetpack Joyride
- Frogger
- Asteroids

There's a logic error with the player switching: if you charge a shot at the end of your timer, you'll fire after control switches to the other person and then it gives you another turn right after.
Listing controls would also help, I realise this is going off the old 90's worms interface, but those aren't common layouts anymore.
